Background of the study
Media literacy—the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media content—is increasingly vital in an era of misinformation and digital communication (Mihailidis, 2023). Libraries, as trusted information institutions, offer programs and resources such as media analysis workshops, fact‑checking guides, and access to diverse news outlets to cultivate critical media skills (Johnson, 2024). In Dutse LGA, where social media usage is high but formal media literacy education is limited, public and school libraries have begun introducing media literacy initiatives to help patrons navigate news ecosystems and develop informed civic perspectives (Adamu, 2025). However, systematic research on the scope, implementation, and impact of these library services on media literacy competencies is lacking. This investigation will examine how libraries in Dutse LGA contribute to patrons’ media literacy development, evaluating program design, resource provision, and participant outcomes to inform best practices for library‑led media education.
Statement of the problem
Despite the proliferation of digital media, many residents of Dutse LGA struggle to discern credible information from misinformation, leading to vulnerability to rumors and polarized discourse (Bello, 2024). Libraries have introduced media literacy services, but low participation rates and limited evaluation frameworks hinder understanding of their effectiveness (Mohammed, 2025). Without empirical insights, library stakeholders cannot optimize media literacy offerings to meet community needs.
Objectives of the study
To catalog media literacy programs and resources provided by libraries in Dutse LGA.
To assess the impact of these services on patrons’ media literacy competencies.
To recommend strategies for enhancing library contributions to media literacy education.
Research questions
What media literacy initiatives do libraries in Dutse LGA offer?
How do these initiatives influence participants’ ability to critically evaluate media content?
What improvements can increase program reach and effectiveness?
Significance of the study
The investigation will equip library professionals, educators, and policymakers with evidence‑based recommendations to strengthen media literacy education in Dutse LGA. By identifying effective approaches and addressing implementation challenges, stakeholders can foster a more informed and resilient citizenry.
Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses on public and school library media literacy services within Dutse Local Government Area. It excludes university library programs. Limitations include potential self‑selection bias among program participants and evolving media landscapes.
